Posterior mitral leaflet prolapse and bicuspid aortic valve: echocardiographic insights into an uncommon association. Case report.

Abstract

Bicuspid aortic valve and mitral valve prolapse are common conditions seen in the echocardiography lab, but their co-occurrence is unusual, particularly when the prolapse involves the posterior leaflet. Cardiac imaging is key to assessing the severity of the lesions. We present the case of a 51-year-old man with no history of cardiovascular disease, who was admitted with progressive dyspnoea and palpitations. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed severe mitral regurgitation due to prolapse of the P2 leaflet of the posterior mitral leaflet, associated with a bicuspid aortic valve with normal function. Echocardiography enabled us to define the valvular lesion mechanisms, to rule out a significant aortic valve lesion and to establish an uncommon anatomical association.
